January 2012

Tuesday 3rd Jan. First Forrester’s mountain bike ride of the year up in Tokai Forrest. As is often the case the car park was full of Baboons, jumping on cars, wrenching at wing mirrors and generally making a nuisance of themselves.

They really are not my favourite animals and when they become as familiar with humans as these are they become a dangerous pest. Robyn came along with her unicycle and caused a fair amount of interest at breakfast. Only Francoise was brave enough to give it a go. This was followed by graphic miming of the probable consequences of attempting it without support! And an able demonstration of how is should be done by Robyn.

There was a great turnout of friends and family and Sheila bought Bubbly and Orange juice to celebrate her birthday.

4th January. Today was Hannie’s 70th birthday. Gill, Rory and I drove out to a Berry Farm near Franshoek to join other friends and family for a celebratory lunch. The setting in the mountains was spectacular (see this page’s header picture). The venue on a grassy terrace with amazing views was very special. The food was great and lunch was rounded off with lovely fresh berries from the Farm. What follows is a selection of the photos. As there are a lot I’ll post them all at thumbnails but you can always click on them to enlarge them.

Hannie’s youngest Grandchild, at least for about four more weeks, attacks the desert!

18th January  Cape Town is experiencing a heat wave with tempretures up in the 30’s. A small group from the Wednesday Walkers went to Cape Point Nature Reserve this morning at 7.30 and hiked for 3.5hours. We had good sightings of Bontebok and Eland and there were more tortoise than you could shake a stick at. Quite a lot of them were of a similar small size that would suggest that they are this year’s crop.

We were really hot by then end of the walk and enjoyed a swim in the tidal pool at Buffels Bay.

24th January. Today the Forresters went out of town to the lovely Oak Valley Farm for their weekly MTB ride. An invite was extended to the recyclers so there was a really go turnout of about 40 riders. The ride took us through some lovely and very varied sceenery and the terrain ranged from rolling plains, steep hills, challenging single track and serious up hill! Crossing the farm’s fences was also ‘interesting’!

All in all it was a really good 26k ride with a great bunch of people.
