September 2013

Sunday 1st Sept. Lovely ride to Auxonne and back this morning. Only other cyclist to pitch up was Nigel. Chose a short one as I am having Mike, Jo and Janna to dinner this evening.

On the ride Nigel and I passed a lady walking her pet ferret. Nigel said that he and Maggie used to have two of them.

5th September. Lovely lunch out on the quay with 14 other boaters. Great weather, sunny but with a nice breeze off the river.

7th September. Wayne, Sophie and baby Eloise

arrived at the boat. The water pump had been fixed in the morning so if the weather clears we will be able to have a little cruise on the river.

8th September.  We managed to get out on the river for a couple of hours in the afternoon having had a drive to the Abbay de Citeaux and a wash tank.

22nd September. Sunday ride. On my own! Lovely though. I decided to ride to Nuits St George which is, I think, the closest wine growing area. It is a pretty town. I found what I thought was a disused canal which turned out to be a canalised section of the river Meuzin which was contained in 1757 following periods of damaging floods over the previous ten years. There was also the site of a previos Lavorie (the old version of a laundrette!) which had been built in 1835 but all that remains now is the steps leading down to the platform where it used to stand. The town is small and the vinyards come right into the middle of it.

23rd September. For the last few Saturdays and Mondays I have been the net controller on Radio Gare D’eau. Radio Gare D’eau is a short broadcast on the short wave radio for the residents of the Gare D’eau, mostly boaters but also some ex-boaters. It gives people the opportunity to check that their radio is working and clear, looks at the weather forecasts and currency rates, offers and requests lifts for people who need to go into one of the local towns etc. It is a lovely facility and I have just been filling in for one of the regulars who is away for a while. Fo me it is also an opportunity to enbed myself more into the community, which is very active and very supportive.

Friday 27th . Jacquie and I went off for a ride with the objective of exploring wash Houses in the area.  We started with the one at Montot which I had seen before and went on to Soirans. It was a lovely ride with light mist and cool tempretures through forects, villages and open countryside. About 40k in all.

28th. Peter arrived today on the Ryanair flight.

29th/30th. We cruised to Auxonne and stayed in the Port Royal, sister marina to H2O. Good to be out on the river and Libertè handled well as usual. Had coffee in the town on Monday and bought wine and an orchid for Jo & Jana who have invited us to dinner this evening.
