February 2014

5th Feb. I had a pleasant stay in Wells and managed to get all the admin stuff done, spend time with family and do some painting in Jon’s showroom and help with clearing out his cellar storage area. I returned to France on the 26th in time for the delivery of the flat pack kitchen stuff from Ikea. I have been flat out ever since! I am staying on “Jubilant” with Steve & Helen which is lovely. They are truly good friends and it feels like home from home. I have stripped all the old wallpaper and am about half way through painting the walls with a plaster primer. I have demolished the ugly old cupboards in the hallway and created two good sized alcoves that will serve as book, wine and CD storage on the one side and a little office on the other. I have gone as far as I want to with the kitchen before I finish the painting. The furniture arrives on Friday. It is all very exciting and BUSY. The weather has been surprisingly mild with only one real frost since I arrived. Pictures below show the canal on a frosty morning and work in progress on the kitchen.

Sunday 9th Feb. The container arrived on Friday and was off loaded into the flat. It is Full. Goodness knows where I am going to put all this stuff. Painting is moving on a pace with the kitchen and what will be my bedroom nearly finished. I do like the view from my kitchen!

10th Feb. Today is Germain’s 92nd birthday and Helen is throwing a dinner for ten on the boat in celebration. Germain has said that she would like Helen to be “at the table” and not “in the kitchen”. So I have undertaken to finish off the food and bring it to table. One of the ten guests dropped out at the last minute so Germain kindly asked me to take his place at the table. It was a great party and the food was really grand.

14th Feb, Saint Valentines Day and the Water Rats organised a Gangsters and Molls party at the museum. The venue was suitable decorated with wanted posters, gaming tables and “drugs”! Everyone made a big effort to dress appropriately and it was a really good turnout with a smattering of the local French community there as well.

Everyone bought their own drink and a plate of food and the spread was enviable, with Mel’s cake the star attraction!

As February drew to a close there were definite signs of spring in the air with blossoms appearing on the trees and daffodils budding. I was nose to the grindstone with continuing renovation work on the apartment though and had little time to appreciate it.
