November – 2019

3rd. Usual Sunday drive out to the building site to see what has been achieved in the 4 day week with torrents of rain!

So foundations dug and materials on site for laying them. Fingers crossed for a dryer week to come.

10th. Sunday check up on the building site. The progress doesn’t look huge but I have a meeting on site with the foreman on the 15th at which point I expect to see the foundations finished after which things will hopefully speed up.

It looks really small at this point. Below you can also see the view behind into the countryside and over to the water tower and in front some of the other houses in progress.

15th. Site meeting this morning with Claud Childz the site foreman. Foundation still not thrown but two workers were busy with the block work for the “vide sanitaire” the space below the floor. The steel work is on site for the frame. The foreman said that the slab only takes 24 hours to dry and that it only needs to stand for a week before the framework can be erected as it is not too heavy. At this point Claud says I can expect to see progress speed up. Meanwhile it is quite a bit colder today.

Later this morning Andre from across the road gave me a container of snails that another neighbor had gathered. After researching on line, they are now sitting in a big bowl with some water and oats, the eating of which will help clean out anything unsavory that they have been eating before capture!

All very French!

17th. Luce came with me to visit the building site this morning. The “vide sanitaire” is finished which means that the slab should be thrown next week.

20th. I am afraid that following many “disgusted” Whatsapp communications from friends on the subject of my snail endeavor I lost courage and consigned the, by now, cargo of corpses, to the bin. However I also found in my letterbox a packet of freshly picked mushrooms from my neighbors Annette & Marco. These I have enjoyed with relish as a well deserved compensation for all the rain we have been enduring.

15. freshly gathered mushrooms from Marco & Annett

24th. Picked up my friend Hella at 10am and went out to the site. EUREKA. The slab is thrown, things should speed up now.

28th. A more or less dry day with a strong wind bought the children out to the beach to sand sail with tiny pink jibs.
