July – 2024

4th It is so easy when you enjoy a wonderful tour such as the one from which I have just returned to forget just how lovely your home town is. I needed to go into the village this morning and was gently reminded of this, our church looking especially good following a recent clean.

being reminded how many opportunities we have to have a coffee, a glass of wine or a meal.

In the church square and on our attractive high street

With its specialist shops

and magnificent town houses, one of which houses the Tourist Office

and our Towen Hall

13th – 18th I had a visit from my daughter Marian and her husb and Pete. We did a fair amount of local walking, visited the night market in Meschers, Pete helped with a number of DIY projects. The hi-lite though was our visit to the Transbonder Bridge at Rochefort.

This is a high level “Mecano” type construction ( in fact Mecano did make a transbonder bridge kit) with a transport platform slung underneath and moved backwards and forwards across the Charante River on cables by and electric motor. The height was to allow the passage of tall ships and earlier in its life it carried vehicles as well as passengers. Since its restoration and re-opening to the public it no longer caries anything bigger than a bicycle!

The restoration has been light touch leaving the original wooden platform and the passenger seating in place.

It was a good visit and I am looking forward to the next one.
